Veterans Day tribute: Virginia Hall the spy
I want to honor an American spy who accomplished many things while being on the battleground in France during World War II, despite a very crippling physical impairment - she only had one leg.
She served the Allied forces as a Special Executive Operations (SOE) spy. Her role was to cripple the Nazi operations in France. During her time in France, she helped prisoners of war escape, trained the French Resistance and sent coded messages to the central office in London which contributed to victorious outcome of the war.
Before that, she had applied to be diplomat for the US but was turned down due to her disability. She would later become a hero for the Allied forces during the WWII, earning her multiple awards including the Distinguished Service Cross in 1945.
Her story is a story of resilience and redirection. When one door is closed shut, find another door and thrive in that path.
